As synthetic biology team lead at Switch Bioworks, Tim guides a team of research scientists, research associates, and technicians towards the development of engineered bacteria that can effectively colonize corn roots, reach critical biomass, and subsequently activate production of nitrogen biofertilizer. Reaching critical biomass prior to nitrogen fertilizer production is pivotal to maximize potential for provision of biologically fixed nitrogen which replaces synthetic nitrogen fertilizers that are deleterious to the environment.
