Synthetic Biology | Associate Scientist or Senior Research Associate

About:

Switch Bioworks is a biotech startup whose mission is to feed a growing world sustainably by displacing industrial nitrogen fertilizer that is damaging the planet. To do this, we’ve developed a new technology based on synthetic biology and the natural plant microbiome. We are looking for talent to help us realize our vision.

About the position: Switch Bioworks is seeking an Associate Scientist or Senior Research Associate with experience in genetic engineering or synthetic biology of non-model plant-associative bacteria. Switch’s headquarters and laboratories are in San Carlos, California. We are seeking an individual with a passion for sustainable agriculture and biological solutions, who will be responsible for the development of new microbial-based agricultural biotechnology.

You're joining a startup, with high growth potential. We work intensely to have a positive impact on the world. To succeed, we need to understand the groups we’re serving and have cultivated a team with diverse backgrounds and perspectives to create an inclusive and equitable workplace. So if you have a passion for solving one of the most challenging issues we face in climate change and food security, join us! We’re not just building revolutionary products that will change the world, we’re also building a consequential, high-performing company - where can you help?

Core responsibilities:

  • Design and construct genetic circuits in non-model bacteria to improve plant growth-promoting characteristics.

  • Design and execute biochemical, protein, and physiological assays in non-model bacteria to assess plant growth-promoting potential.

  • Independently troubleshoot laboratory experiments.

  • Perform plant propagation assays.

  • Contribute to scientific strategy.

  • Clearly and effectively present experimental proposals and rationale, as well as results and next steps, to team members in both written and verbal forms.

  • Stay current with scientific literature and share findings with the team.

  • Promote a culture of safety in the workplace.

  • Collect and maintain detailed records of experimental data and perform data analysis.

  • Understand biological products including natural product chemistry and microbial physiology of bacteria, filamentous bacteria, and fungi.

  • Alignment with and excitement for our values. We really care about embodying our values, not just talking about them.

  • Occasional off-shift hours may be necessary as experimental designs require.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work full-time in the US and be on-site in the San Francisco Bay Area. Available to start within the next 1-3 months.

  • A bachelor’s degree in molecular biology, synthetic biology, genetic engineering, microbiology or similar with 3+ years of relevant industry experience. Depending on experience, level will be Senior Research Associate or Associate Scientist.

  • At least 2 years of relevant experience with engineering bacterial chromosomes.

  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills, including a strong attention to detail.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience with aseptic technique and the culture of microorganisms.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, problem-solving skills, and a detail-oriented approach.

  • Energetic and self-motivated individual with the ability and desire to work independently as well as in a collaborative team environment.

  • Must be able to work standing/walking for long periods of time and possess the dexterity to handle delicate equipment regularly.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with engineering the chromosomes of non-model bacteria. Prior knowledge  in engineering Gram positive bacteria is a plus.

  • Experience with biochemical and protein assays.

  • Experience with synthetic biology in bacteria.

Pay Range:

  • $90,000 - $140,000/ year
