MARCELO BUENO BATISTA
SCIENTIST, SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY
Roots:
Marcelo is a Senior Scientist at Switch Bioworks who aims to develop new strategies to engineer naturally occurring soil microbes as an alternative to synthetic nitrogen fertilizer. This new technology aims to revolutionize agricultural practices, making nitrogen more accessible and sustainable.
Before joining Switch Bioworks, Marcelo was an independent BBSRC sponsored Research Fellow at the John Innes Centre in the UK, where he led groundbreaking work on the transcriptional regulation of nitrogen fixation. Marcelo has a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Universidade Federal do Parana in Brazil. Outside work, Marcelo enjoys spending time with his family. In addition he also likes to watch cars (and bikes!) go fast around a track (Formula 1 and IndyCar, mostly).
